I work primarily work with copper, brass, and aluminum, specifically for designs that utilize sheet metal and wire. I also have experience with casting in pewter and bronze, as well as with creating items using metal clays (Precious Metal Clay and homemade copper clays).
I use a Nomad 883 Pro and a MakerDreams Evo One CNC mill to cut my designs out of thin sheets of metal. After they're cut by my machines, I form each piece by hand where necessary (with the assistance of various tools) and finish them with wire brushing, polishing and cleaning to achieve the desired final appearance.
I get a lot of ideation and processing done in my dreams, where I am most free of chronocentric time. Chronocentricity describes the way that our world is fixated on the white/Western/colonial conception of time. I feel free outside of that, particularly when I dream of Black faces and listen to what they give me. I consider what I learn through my dreams to be just as a important as what I learn in my waking hours, and so I have a dedicated practice of intentional dreaming to expand my artistic vision. Outside of dreams, I study Black faces and the things they show me - especially about chronoliberation - in order to develop direction for my designs.
A name is an address, and a body is, too. When I name my pieces, it comes from with an intention of locating modes of being in which Black chronoliberation can be found. I combine words that I have not seen anchored together before in order to generate names that describe liberatory ways we can relate to the Earth, each other and all of time.
Given that I am most motivated by exploring the connection between my jewelry and Black chronoliberation, much of my jewelry is created specifically to adorn Black bodies. This jewelry is denoted by the term "crest"; every crest that I make is intended to be worn by Black folks only. I also create other styles of jewelry that are intended to be worn by anybody.
